The Republic of Guatemala occupies a historically rich part of the world with the first settlers estimated to have arrived some 14,000 years ago. Much has been documented about the pre-Columbian civilisations and a lot of surveys and explorations have been conducted to define exactly the nature of those cultures with the result suggesting that there was a significant amount of cultural diffusion. This relatively pleasant interaction of tribes can be contrasted with the tragic Colonial period of the country's history following the Spanish conquest of the region and the devastating effects of the diseases the Spanish bought with them.
Despite independence being gained in the Nineteenth Century, along with the likes of Costa Rica, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Honduras; Guatemala also had a tragic period that followed - least the civil war that accompanied the much wider Second World War. This was, in turn, followed by guerrilla wars in the 1970's and further unrest in the 1980's. It wasn't until 1996 that the Civil War ended with thanks to the United Nations, Norway and Spain.
Delivering parcels to Guatemala is very much similar to other countries in the region. Often we can arrange the collection and shipping of packages to occur on a two to three-day basis with DHL and three to four days with the Parcel Monkey Air Express service. As one of the poorest countries in Latin America, the level of trade between ourselves and the Central American country is significantly less than, say, Mexico and, hence, we facilitate fewer deliveries to Guatemala. Despite that being the case we still offer delivery within the same time scales and price - for given parcel dimensions.
The FCO does report that certain districts of Guatemala have a 'State of Siege' declared upon them which may affect local deliveries. Be sure to check the FCO website for updates.
You should also confirm the level of duties to be paid by the recipient. Some personal effects may attract duties of 27% while new goods, and commercial items may incur duties ranging from 5% to 40% PLUS a 12% VAT.
At the time of writing, it appears that all electrical items must have their serial numbers, make and models listed on the external documentation. Particular care should also be given to appliances as if they were manufactured before 2000 they may be refused entry.
Should you need to confirm anything relating to the nation we suggest you contact the Embassy for the latest guidance at:
