As the most densely populated country in Central America El Salvador borders the significantly less populated countries of Guatemala and Honduras. Of course, they share much of the same ancient, Pre-Columbian history. The Pipil people who preceded the Aztecs called this region 'Kozkatlan' which is a Nahuatl word for 'The Place of Precious Jewels'. The period of European Contact was one of great turmoil for much of the indigenous population as the introduction of smallpox resulted in around 80% of the population to die of the disease.
Also during this period the country of what we call El Salvador was part of the Captaincy General of Guatemala, and it wasn't until 1811 that a major act to gain independence was seen. However, the 1811 Independence Movement was put down. Three years later it fought for independence again but this time with Honduras, Nicaragua also taking part. But it wasn't until seven years that those countries joined the Federal Republic of Central America.
Skipping forward to the later part of the Twentieth Century El Salvador followed many other nations in the region, and in South America, with a coup d'état. This period bought great struggles to the country and it wasn't until the return of democracy and the economic reforms that followed that the population started to see a general increase in living standards.
This all contributes to the level of economic trade between the UK and El Salvador. That said, there is still a great deal of corruption being reported and a need for the national government to prop up some industries. It is not to belittle the achievements of the El Salvadorian government as the nation still has the third largest economy in the region - behind Costa Rica and Panama.
As you are trying to find a courier to send items into foreign countries it is essential that you understand and comply with not only our own conditions of carriage and restricted/prohibited items list, but also that of the El Salvador government. You can find a guide in English here. You should take particular attention to items with magnets in, batteries, personal effects, hazardous toiletries, lottery tickets and money. It is your obligation, however, to ensure that you are aware and comply with the current list. You can find more about that here or contact them direct at usuario.dga @ mh.gob.sv Tel: 2244-5182.
