The Netherlands Antilles is located in the Caribbean with a population of 227,049 as of 2009. However, recently many of the islands that make up for the Netherlands Antilles have now managed to claim independence. The first of these islands to do so was Aruba, which became a separate country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 1986. Curacao and Sint Maarten soon followed with the other islands becoming separate within the kingdom of the Netherlands. As these islands are in the kingdom of the Netherlands their national languages are Dutch. As with many islands situated in the Caribbean, tourism plays a big part in the economy of the Netherlands Antilles.

Many people from the Netherlands and across the world visit the island's and the tourist's money is a contributing factor to the island's economy. The nation currency of the Netherlands Antilles is split. On the islands of Bonaire, Saba, and Sint Eustatius the US dollar is used and on the islands Curacao and Sint Maarten the Caribbean guilder is used.
