Just like Anguilla, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Falkland Islands, Montserrat, Pitcairn Islands, Saint Helena, South Georgia and the Turks and Caicos Islands (amongst some others), Gibraltar is an British Overseas territory effectively since the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 - which has caused many diplomatic issues with Spain which surrounds it on all the sides which isn't the Mediterranean sea. Occasionally this can interrupt the transportation of goods into the territory via road.

A few decades ago the Gibraltan economy was dominated by the naval dockyard but this has now been reduced to less than ten per cent over recent years - partly because of the influx of bookmarkers, internet gaming and financial services which flocked to the territory due to favourable tax laws.
