Useful information for sending a parcel to Mexico

There are times when it is necessary to ship items from the UK to Mexico. Having proper information on-hand to assist in the process is helpful.
Main Country Facts
Mexico is one of three North American countries, joined by both the United States and Canada. The government of the country officially follows a federal constitutional republic model. Mexico is a large country, ranking fifth in overall area. With 111 million citizens, there are only ten other countries that beat Mexico in total population; no other Hispanic country has more purchasing power than Mexico. Mexico is closely connected to America as a member of the North American Free Trade Agreement. Mexico does not have particularly close ties to the United Kingdom, but there aren't distinct biases against trade with the UK either. In fact, Mexico's constitution provides legal protection for the laws of other nations.
Mexico has significant purchasing power on the world market. The country has a national debt that is falling, leading to a growing number of middle-class citizens. There is, however, a large disparity in income between urban and rural communities in Mexico. In addition, Mexico's economy is significantly dependent on income earned within the borders of the United States, with about $20 billion USD crossing the border every year.
Mexico has several strong industries, including tourism and automobile manufacturing. The country is also largely energy independent, producing and refining its own oil, as well as making hydroelectric power. Mexican industry is also a huge producer of small appliances.
Import Restrictions
It can be hard to find firm lists of what is and is not acceptable for importation into Mexico. Importation requirements are regulated by the
Ministry of Economy. In addition, Mexico prohibits items that most other countries would find acceptable for importation. One such example is used
hardware.
Most animals and animal products are entirely restricted, including wool, meat and leather; these restrictions are due to the fear of things such as foot and mouth disease infiltrating the local animal population. Illegal drugs may not be shipped into the country, including by-products and chemicals that could be used in drug production. Though it isn't clear in the listings why, Some couriers will not deliver candy, oil or used clothing not packed in luggage, though other courier services can transport them with no problem with proper paperwork.
Permits, restrictions or limitations may apply to shipments of:
- Asian textile products,
- alcohol,
- tobacco products,
- medications,
- firearms,
- bicycles,
- pencils
- and compact discs.
Other restricted items include matches, new or used bicycle tires, apples, lard and brined chicken products.
Useful Information
Money can be sent to Mexican citizens as long as it does not exceed $10,000USD. Amounts over that require a customs declarations to be filed. Some shipments are exempt from duty taxes entirely, especially if they contain personal belongings. There is, however, no duty exemption for items that are sent as gifts. Package all shipments carefully, as wet or leaking envelopes or boxes can lead to delivery problems. Also, know what the labelling requirements are, as well as the environmental regulations that might apply to any products you want to import to Mexico. Finally, always properly declare the value of the products when shipping from the United Kingdom to Mexico.
