Useful information for sending a parcel to Pakistan

As a volatile, middle-eastern country, it can be challenging to ship to Pakistan. However, following the correct procedures makes the process easier.
Main Country Facts
Pakistan is located in a very volatile area of Asia, surrounded by Iran, China, India and Afghanistan. Despite its dictatorial neighbours, the country is organized as a parliamentary republic. Pakistan has around 170 million citizens, leading to a number six ranking in worldwide population. Pakistan became independent in 1947. Unlike most of the other Islamic nations in the region, the government in is possession of nuclear weapons. Luckily, Pakistan is friendly to other democratic nations, including both the United States and Britain, though the nuclear issue has led to some strain over the years. Pakistan is widely impacted by regional unrest; many Afghan citizens, for example, seek refuge in Pakistan, straining limited resources.
Pakistan has not always had the best economic policies, leading to a roller-coaster effect in the nation's economy. Reforms that began in the 1990s have improved conditions, but poverty is still a distinct issue for Pakistani citizens. Pakistanis have a very low savings rate and are extremely sensitive to inflation. Agriculture accounts for approximately 20% of the economic base, while a growing service industry is responsible for more than half of the GDP. Foreign investors are also beginning to see the potential in Pakistani real estate. Surprisingly, tourism also remains a measurable resource for the area, despite the fact that Pakistan is considered to be a dangerous place for foreign visitors.
Import Restrictions
It is quite common to ship goods from the United Kingdom to Pakistan. Britain, in fact, ranks second when it comes to trade with Pakistan. Common items sent from the UK to Pakistan include:
- steel
- plastic
- paper
- iron
- and machinery.
While the Federal Board of Revenue maintains a very thorough website for its customs procedures, the site is difficult to navigate. There are no easy to find lists of prohibitions and restrictions for importation. Companies like FedEx, however, indicate that there may be issues or special circumstances surrounding the shipment of:
- alcohol
- flammable materials
- animal fur
- antiques
- hazardous chemicals
- narcotics
- jewellery
- weapons
- tobacco products
- herbs
- and satellite parts.
In addition, Pakistan clearly prohibits shipments from Israel and culturally-offensive items; anything that derides Muslim culture and religion is not welcome.
The official customs page for Pakistan is found
here. While finding import requirements on the site can be difficult, the agency does provide easy online access to the various forms and applications needed to apply for the correct import licenses. In addition, for those who can weed through the legal jargon, the import requirements, prohibitions and restrictions are available here in a
PDF document. Please note that when navigating to this PDF from the Pakistan Federal Board of Revenue website, the import and export documents are actually mislabelled as of 2011.
Useful Information
Pakistan has specific laws that regulate shipments sent from various partnering or antagonistic countries. The United Kingdom, however, is not subject to any of these special circumstances and all shipments from the UK should fall under the general importation rules of Pakistan. Pakistan has special laws in place for countries like
Malaysia,
Sri Lanka and
China. The Pakistan customs office claims standards of operation that include transparency, fairness and integrity.
