Useful information for sending a parcel to Japan
As Japan is one of our most important trading partners, and despite some relative slow economic growth over the past two decades, as a courier company we still assist a large number of British residents send parcels to Japan.
A large proportion of those parcels are of a business or commercial nature, but we have also seen a significant growth in the number of packages labelled as containing domestic goods. This may be related to the sheer volume of British expats in Japan. Currently Britain has the third largest number of nationals residing in Japan after
America and
Germany. We obviously have a large number of Japanese tourists visiting our historic and cultural sites who often do not wish to wait to return some of their purchases and who do arrange couriers to ship them back to Japan.
When you do send a parcel to Japan it is important to understand the rules regarding duties and restrictions. If you would like to understand the process then the Japanese Customs authority has a useful and pictorial guide which can be found
here. Furthermore there are items that are prohibited, have controls or are restricted. That list can be found
here.
The address for the authority is: Customs and Tariff Bureau, 3-1-1 Kasumigaseki, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo 100-8940, JAPAN and their frequently asked questions can be found
here.
