Useful information for sending a parcel to Ethiopia
Ethiopia is one of the most interesting countries on the planet given that it is often cited as the origin of the human race. Latterly the country was modernised by Haile Selassie and then descended into hardship with droughts, coups, uprisings and Soviet control during the 1970's and 1980's. In the recent past Ethiopia have had multi-party elections and the end of the conflict over the unmarked border with Eritrea.
Given that Ethiopia is the second-most populous country on the continent of Africa they do have an abundance of human resource which has helped it deliver a fast-growing economy, and certainly one of the fast growing of all non-oil-dependent countries in Africa.
Although most of Ethiopia's trade is dependent on coffee, and we don't allow the shipment of food via our parcel delivery network, there is still a noticeable amount of non-food related trade between us and Ethiopia. If you do need to send parcels to Ethiopia, we do have some cheap prices you might like to consider.
When it comes to importing goods into Ethiopia it is essential that you understand the rate of General Sales Tax that could be charged to the recipient of your parcel. You can find more information about this in this (
pdf from the United Nations). Specific details about the specific duties can be found in
these two PDFs from the local
revenue and customs authority.
If you were sending small and light parcels to Addis Ababa, Mekele, Adama, Dire Dawa or other towns and cities in Ethiopia then you should expect to pay around £60 and around £200 for heavier parcels - both with a two to three days from collection service.
