Useful information for sending a parcel to Azerbaijan
The Republic Azerbaijan is a country in the Caucasus of
Europe which has land borders with
Armenia, Russia, and Georgia. It also has an exclave of Nakhchivan which shares its border with Armenia and Iran which gives it a very small border with
Turkey along the Aras River where the E002 road becomes the D080. Azerbaijan also has a 283 mile "coastline" along the Caspian Sea - where the capital of Baku sits on the Absheron Peninsula.
Some believe that the birth of human civilisation was actually in Azerbaijan instead of Africa; whilst others believe that the country was just one of the areas that early humans migrated to out of Africa.
Azerbaijan was one of the first Islamic countries (by population rather than any official status) to have a fairly liberal culture which there was fairly strong support of secularism and tolerance.
The region, however, has been less of a relaxed one with conflicts following the breakup of the Soviet Union regarding the ownership and occupation of various territories.
Another impact of gaining independence was the transitioning into a free market economy. At first this led to moderately high inflation (much less than its neighbouring Armenia), however, in 2006 this was largely solved by the creation of a new currency - the Azerbaijani Manat.
Currently Azerbaijan performing fairly well, with an expected to be approximately 3.7% in 2011. Part of this was due to the creation of an oil pipeline which became operational in 2006 and is expected to provide revenues of around $160bn per year.
